Youth Mentorships

At the heart of Govandi Arts Festival is the 6-month long mentorship program where mentors from various creative disciplines like Theatre, Film, Photography, Public Arts, Rap, Game Design and Stand-up Comedy - nurture, support and teach the youth of Govandi. The youth are selected by observing
their participation in the existing creative programs, and a series of workshops aimed to understand their interests, aspirations and existing skills.

Artist Residency

Govandi Arts is a community-led arts and culture movement that reclaims, transforms and celebrates the socio-spatial narrative of marginalised neighbourhoods in Mumbai’s Govandi. The Festival celebrates the spirit and resilience of the residents through performative and visual arts.

With the aim to hone the skills of the residents and encourage city residents to interact with the neighbourhood, we work with artist residents across the city, enabling them to use different mediums to situate their methods of practice within the community of Govandi for four months. We support them in the curation and exhibition of the work that comes through the residency. In the last edition of the festival, we issued an open call and selected artists working with different creative mediums of sound, animation, narrative mapping to capture the voices from the neighbourhood.

Lantern Parade

Bringing back a one-of-its-kind neighbourhood-led procession in the lanes of Govandi through spectacular lanterns! In 2023, we collaborated with Lamplighters Arts CIC, from Bristol UK, to make this happen.
Taking forward this legacy, we will once again organise a lantern parade with the support of Dee Moxon from the Lamplighter’s team.

Workshops

From gardening, to lantern-making, and zines to mehendi, there is something for everyone in our curated workshops. We invite creative professionals within and outside the neighbourhood to conduct workshops at the festival. These workshops are not just spaces to learn and explore, but to also share and aspire together.
